Germ\u00e0 Col\u00f3n Dom\u00e8nech (1928-2020)<\/h3>
<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n

It is sure that the one who has dealt or deals with any aspect related to the linguistic research within the field of the Romance Philology \u2013 and especially of Catalan philology and Occitan or either of French etymology or of Spanish linguistics \u2013 will face the name of Germ\u00e0 Col\u00f3n. His copious and accurate works, for instance, of etymology or historical linguistics demonstrate it and they are valued within the realm of the philological research. His areas of expertise were lexicon, lexicography, Romance etymology, text editing and translation studies.<\/span><\/p>\n

Germ\u00e0 Col\u00f3n was born in Castell\u00f3n de la Plana on November 30, 1928. He studied Romance Philology at the Universities of Barcelona, Louvain and Zurich and received his doctorate from the Central University of Madrid in 1952. From 1951 to 1953 he was an assistant in the chair of Historical Grammar of the Spanish Language at the University of Barcelona. Since 1951 he was a collaborator of Editorial Barcino for the publication of the series of texts “Els Nostres Cl\u00e0ssics”. From 1954 to 1964 he collaborated in the edition of Walter von Wartburg\u2019s Franz\u00f6sisches Etymologisches W\u00f6rterbuch. At the University of Basel he was a Spanish Lector (1954), “Privat-Dozent” (1959), Extraordinary Professor (1963), Full Professor (1967-1997) and “Emeritus” since 1997.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div>\n

    Germ\u00e0 Col\u00f3n’s <\/span>work<\/b> embraces different areas of linguistics, humanistic culture and knowledge. He carried out an enormous research work, focused on the study of Romance languages, particularly Catalan and Spanish, from the perspective of etymological research, philological publishing and historical linguistics.<\/span>
